The UW’s Global Business Center and Certificate of International Studies in Business (CISB) at the Foster School of Business, in partnership with, AIESEC Seattle, an international student organization, are hosting a half-day workshop for undergraduate students highlighting Global Business Perspectives on Technology and Global Business.

This technology summit will feature successful and influential global technology companies and explore the integral role that technology has in today’s global business environment.

We will kick-off the day with a keynote speech given by VP & Treasurer at Apple, Gary Wipfler, and then launch into smaller breakout sessions spotlighting relevant hot topics such as Cyber Security, Big Data, and e-commerce in China.

Information Sessions for Washington State Legislative Internship Program, April 13th!

On Monday, April 13th, there will be four half-hour long information sessions for the Washington State Legislative Internship Program.  This is a paid, full-time internship in Olympia where the students work as legislative aids for the State House or Senate while earning 15 credits.

This is an amazing chance to develop important skills, connections, and knowledge that will be a benefit in almost any professional environment.

Although there are similar internship programs in other state legislatures, this one is considered one of the best of its kind.  Many of the other legislative internship programs were based on the success
of this program.

This internship is open to students from ALL majors and runs during Winter quarter when the legislature is in session.

All four information sessions are in Gowen Hall, room 1A.

National Student Exchange (NSE) gives you an opportunity to experience a different area with its unique cultural and academic opportunities. Since NSE's beginning in 1968, more than 96,000 students have had the opportunity to participate in NSE, giving them the opportunity to:

Many returning UW students describe NSE as a life-changing experience which has made them more independent, self-confident and resourceful; expanded their risk-taking capabilities; and helped them better define their academic and career objectives. Prior to exchange, you will develop a written agreement to ensure that the work you satisfactorily complete on exchange will count toward your degree program here. NSE operates with tuition reciprocity (tuition paid to our campus or at the in-state rates of the host campus) and federal financial aid portability. Your nomination for participation will be done by NSE at UW, with selection by the host campus being completed in March. With placement rates of 97 percent, our students can generally find a location to meet both their academic and personal objectives.

Information Sessions- Fellowships at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Each year the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers 10-12 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors (in 2014-15) and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year (2013-14). They are selected from a pool of nominees from close to 400 participating colleges. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates and have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists and government officials. Positions are paid, full-time positions for one year (salary is $37,000 with full benefits).

Candidates apply to work on specific research projects at the Carnegie Endowment. The 2015-16 projects are:

A. Democracy
B. Nuclear Policy
C. Energy & Climate
D. Middle East Studies: Native or near-native Arabic language skills essential. Strong background in Middle East politics and/or history is a huge plus.
E. South Asian Studies: Applicants should be comfortable with quantitative data manipulation as well as possess an interest in military issues. A strong background in international relations theory, political theory, or international political economy is essential. A strong mathematical background is a plus. Note: foreign language skills are not required.
F. China Studies (Asia Program): Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.
G. Japan Studies (Asia Program): Japanese reading skills required.
H. Southeast Asian Studies (Asia Program): Strong background in economics essential. Background in politics of the region and knowledge of quantitative techniques a plus.
I. Economics (Asia Program): Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.

Students on F-1 visas who are eligible to work in the US for the full year (August 1 through July 31) may apply for the program. If you attend a participating school outside of the United States, you must be a US citizen (due to work permit requirements).
· Applicants should have completed a significant amount of course work related to their discipline of interest. Language and other skills may also be required for certain assignments.

Our special guest will be Professor Cliff Mass from the department of Atmospheric Sciences. He will present on ‘Successful Public Speaking’, full of great information on how to gain your confidence and find your voice in presentations.  The Professor is a great speaker, who consistently wows his audience. We guarantee you’ll learn something new and have fun doing it!

 

One of our Toastmaster members, Deb Smith, will present ‘What is Toastmasters’. This speech will be evaluated by Toastmasters’ member Kate Curtis who will demonstrate on how positive evaluators can give constructive feedback to help speakers improve.

Critical Language Scholarship Program - UW information sessions

Undergraduate and graduate students in all fields interested in studying critical languages may be interested in applying for the Critical Language Scholarships for fully-funded overseas intensive summer language and cultural immersion programs offered by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.  The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to broaden the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries.  Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply.  Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers in any field.

Last year, 10 UW students were selected to participate and studied languages in summer 2014 in Azerbaijan, China, Morocco, South Korea, Tajikistan, and India.

Languages offered:
· Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, and Urdu: Beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;
· Arabic and Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;

The International Student Services (ISS) Office is offering a new workshop this Autumn for F-1 international students who are in the final year of their degree programs. Students will learn important information on maintaining their F-1 status in regards to enrollment, graduation, employment, travel and more! Are you interested in studying abroad at the National University of Singapore?

UW’s Office of International Programs & Exchanges (IPE) is pleased to announce that Jacob O’Quinn, from the National University of Singapore (NUS) will be holding an information session for advisers, faculty and students interested in learning more about our exchange program in Singapore. NUS is one of Asia’s highest ranked universities, with strong programs in business, liberal arts and sciences. All coursework is in English.
