PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITY

Attention undergraduate students! The Washington Undergraduate Law Review (WULR) is looking for submissions!

WULR is an academic legal journal at the University of Washington that publishes law-related essays, research papers, and other written work by undergraduates. The law review is entirely run by undergraduates at the University of Washington.

Submission to WULR is open to all majors. We value papers on a variety of legal topics, and students are encouraged to submit undergraduate theses or other academic papers 12 pages or longer. Submissions will be selected for publication by WULR’s executive editors based upon quality of writing, research, and analysis. All submissions accepted for publication may be edited for length and clarity.

Email articles as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx) in double-spaced, 12 point type. Articles should include a cover page with the following information:

1. Full name

2. Contact information (email, phone)

3. Article title

4. Complete abstract

5. Brief biography

6. College / university


All submissions for the winter quarter issue of the Washington Undergraduate Law Review are due by Friday, March 20th. Please submit to wulr@uw.edu.

Unlike the great number of entering freshmen who self-identify as being pre-med or a similar pre-health identity, potential law school applicants may not decide to even investigate the possibility of law school until well into their academic careers. In this session, we will go over some of the online resources for pre-law information that are available to students, provide answers to some of the most common questions that pre-law students ask, and address any concerns that you have in your discussions with your students who may be thinking about law school.

UW Law Fair needs Volunteers, Nov. 13, 2014

This is an excellent opportunity for those applying to law school and a great way to speak to the schools in person! Over 60 schools will be in attendance from all over the country. The fair is November 13th with volunteer positions from 7:15am to 3:00pm. People are also needed to help put up signs the day before.

Witness positions for the 1L Mock Trial

Calling All Students!!

 Do you have an interest in the law? Are you interested in the opportunity to meet current law students, professors and professionals in a fun, competitive environment? Have you ever dreamed of being the guy in Law and Order who forces a confession out of a flustered perpetrator? If you answered yes to any of these questions (or even if you didn't) you should email Asti Gallina about playing a witness in the UW Law Mock Trial Competition.

What: The role is for a witness to a crime. Witnesses are responsible for testifying about what they knew about the crime and answering questions on cross examination.
Where: UW School of Law - Gates Hall.
When: 6:00-7:30 beginning Monday November 3rd through Thursday November 6th. As a witness you will be on the stand for 10 minutes of testimony and 5 minutes of cross examination. Some rehearsals required prior to trial.
Why: Something awesome to add diversity to your resume! Coffee paid for by a 1L from the school of law! You get to pretend you're from Texas!

New class for UW pre-law students

Would you like to learn more about what it takes to succeed in law school?

Have you heard that the first year of law school is often confusing and frustrating, but didn’t know why?

If so, then take Introduction to Common Law Legal Reasoning GEN ST 391 in Autumn 2014 for a short, clear introduction to what it means to “think like a lawyer” without the confusion and frustration.

This two credit general studies course will only be taught once on a credit/no credit basis.  The instructor is a UW Law School professor with more than 20 years teaching experience.  Prerequisites include:

• At least junior standing in Autumn 2014;
• Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0;
• Agreement to Comply with the Study Protocol; and
• Have not already taken any law school prep program such as CLEO, BarBri Preview, CHH Law School Prep Institute, LEEWS, etc.
• Are available between 3:30 and 5:20 on Thursday afternoons in Autumn 2014 to attend class

Please note:

• This is *NOT* an LSAT preparation course
• This is *NOT* a simulation of an actual JD law school course but will cover some similar material

Class times:  

• Large Section Tuesdays 3:30-4:20 (all students attend together)
• Small Section 1 Thursday 3:30-4:20 (10 students max)
• Small Section 2 Thursday 4:30-5:20 (10 students max)

This course is designed as an experiment to test whether some core legal reasoning skills can be taught to undergraduate students not enrolled in a JD program.  Students taking the class will be required to agree to follow the Study Protocol which can be accessed here: https://catalyst.uw.edu/workspace/jkwinn1/45514/

All students will be assigned randomly to one of the two small sections before being issued an add code, so priority in enrollment will be given to students who are free between 3:30 and 5:20 on Thursday afternoons and thus could attend either Small Section.

The Office of Minority Affairs is offering a low-cost LSAT course this summer. The schedule is M-T-W-Th, 3:30pm—5:30pm from June 23—July 25. It is $550 plus $30 for materials.

Some sign-up logistics:  Sign up is in person at the front desk of the Instructional Center, 1307 NE 40th street.  Payment is via Husky Card ONLY (University policy does not allow us to deal with other forms of payment.)  You are responsible for purchasing the text for the course.  We will be using "10 New Actual Official LSAT PrepTests with Comparative Reading," published by LSAC.  There are many books in this series with very similar titles, so be sure to get this exact one.  It contains LSATs #51 through #60.  Additional instructional materials will be provided on paper or electronically at no extra cost to you.

percentile on the exam.  He received his Masters in philosophy at UW and
