Information Sessions for Washington State Legislative Internship Program, April 13th!

On Monday, April 13th, there will be four half-hour long information sessions for the Washington State Legislative Internship Program.  This is a paid, full-time internship in Olympia where the students work as legislative aids for the State House or Senate while earning 15 credits.

This is an amazing chance to develop important skills, connections, and knowledge that will be a benefit in almost any professional environment.

Although there are similar internship programs in other state legislatures, this one is considered one of the best of its kind.  Many of the other legislative internship programs were based on the success
of this program.

This internship is open to students from ALL majors and runs during Winter quarter when the legislature is in session.

All four information sessions are in Gowen Hall, room 1A.

Internship Position with ReElect Jean Godden

Jean Godden serves on the Seattle City Council. She is running for re-election in District 4 which encompasses the University of Washington and surrounding areas.  She is running to finish the work she started on the Council to achieve true gender equity, sustain Seattle’s vibrant neighborhoods and provide accessible, fair transportation. She is in search of motivated and energetic interns to help continue the fight!

Interns who demonstrate passion and perform at a rigorous pace will gain increased responsibility, and consequently, be sufficiently experienced to hold staff positions on all levels of political campaigns.

Interns will be involved in the following duties:
        Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers
        Volunteer data management
        Donor research  
        Developing and staffing fundraising events
        Direct voter contact and persuasion
        Utilizing and mastering Votebuilder, a program used by all major Democratic campaigns as a canvassing and campaign management tool
        Utilizing and mastering NGP, a program used by all major Democratic campaigns as a political finance and donor research too

Requirements:
        Strong academic record in any field of study.
        Must be well-organized, flexible, able to work well with others, and capable of multitasking while prioritizing projects.
        Excellent communication skills
        Must be able to work independently while following detailed instructions.
        Proficiency in MS Office.
        Knowledge of and passion for local city politics preferred.

Working on a local campaign gives invaluable experience and insight into the inner workings of our government. It will teach the skills required to hold positions on larger campaigns and it  is great to have on a resume – the 2016 presidential campaigns will be in search of employees with campaign experience!  The internship is unpaid but eligible for credit. Work hours are flexible and will be available between April 1, 2015 and November 3, 2015

Summer 2015 Internships with Congressman Dave Reichert

The Washington, D.C. and Issaquah Offices of Congressman Dave Reichert are excited to announce that they are now accepting summer internship applications. Interns are an integral part of the office, working on the front lines of constituent services.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge on the inner workings of the federal government. Internship responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching constituent requests, drafting correspondence, constituent outreach, keeping up to date on local and national issues, and data entry.  There are also opportunities for long-term research and outreach projects.

1. The Gerald A. Soffen Memorial Fund is pleased to announce the first 2015 Travel Grant application opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing studies in fields of space science and engineering.
The Travel Grants, in the amount of $500, enable student recipients to attend professional meetings to present their research. The Spring 2015 Travel Grant application deadline is April 1, 2015. Jerry Soffen, a biologist by training, led a distinguished career in NASA, including serving as the Project Scientist for Viking and as an architect for the NASA Astrobiology Institute. The Travel Grant continues Jerry’s dedication to educating and involving future generations in space science and engineering pursuits. KCSARC’s CourtWatch Program (King County Sexual Assault Resource Center) is again recruiting volunteers. Two sustainability internships available

The UW Sustainability office is hiring a paid Sustainability Communications intern (HuskyJobs #87919). The West coast representative for the DAAD scholarship program for study, research and internships in Germany will be visiting the Seattle campus Friday, March 13th. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers a wide variety of funding opportunities for undergraduates and graduates including summer research internships in the sciences. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON ROME CENTER STUDENT INTERNSHIP 2015/2016

In 2001 the University of Washington established a Rome Center Student Internship position. This position is designed to provide UW students with practical experience working in an office environment, and especially affording them the opportunity for contact with a cultural environment other than their own. This single Internship position is especially suited to a student enrolled at the University of Washington while working on Italian language studies or on other independent study topic which would be enriched by study in Italy. The Rome Center Student Internship position is outlined below.

GENERAL TERMS:

  • dates: June/July 2015 - June/July 2016
  • 20-hour work week
  • flexible hours; some hours required outside normal office hours

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • must be enrolled for study at the UW for duration of internship, with UW faculty member overseeing independent study
  • prior participation on a UW Rome-based academic program preferred
  • study abroad registration through Office of International Programs & Exchanges (for more info contact IPE office at ipe@uw.edu)

WAGES & HOUSING:

  • small studio apartment at Rome Center provided (includes all utilities except phone)
  • $450 monthly stipend

City of Kenmore: Communications Internship



The City of Kenmore is seeking an undergraduate in their senior year or graduate-level student intern to work within the City Manager’s Office.

This position will support our communications and outreach team. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about writing, enjoys working with the public, detail-oriented, and comfortable with multi-tasking.

This position is eligible for up to a 9-month internship through 2015 (full time in summer and approximately 16-20 hours/week during the school year). For students, we will allow some flexibility around the daily and weekly schedule.

Duties could include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the City’s pedestrian and bicycle safety community education plan, including marketing materials, public education campaigns, and special events. 
  • Manage and engage in a variety of social media platforms 
  • Write and edit content for newsletter and news releases 
  • Photograph events and post to media 
  • Attend outreach events 
  • Grant research and writing 
  • Assist with Council reports and communication pieces 
  • Conduct research and analysis on a variety of municipal issues 
  • Other duties as assigned 
Qualifications:
  • Degree (or pursuing degree) in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, public administration, political science, etc.
  • Enrollment in a related graduate program or a senior in a related undergraduate program

  • High level of initiative and motivation

General Information
Blue Wave Political Partners, a political compliance and fundraising consulting firm, is seeking interns to join their growing company. The scope of work includes assisting in compliance and fundraising for Democratic candidates, with campaign races in almost every level of government in Washington State and across the country. Interns are expected to work at least a full quarter with the opportunity for school credit if allowed by the college/university of the applicant. Hours may vary week to week, and start/end dates are flexible.

Responsibilities
Assist with responsibilities including:
·         Special event coordination from small gatherings to large scale, high profile political fundraisers.
·         Conduct in-depth donor research, maintenance, and management of data.
·         Direct donor communication and donor maintenance for multiple political clients.
·         Manage office administrative duties, including mail processing and bank deposits.
·         Other responsibilities as they develop.

Qualifications
Eligibility: A candidate must be an undergraduate student or recent graduate. No specific major is required, but a basic understanding of government and campaign processes is helpful.

Skills:
·         Requires proficient professional experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software to include Word, Excel, Publisher, and Visio
·         Ability to prioritize and meet competing deadlines
·         Ability to maintain and manage highly confidential or sensitive information
·         Additional skills in graphic design valuable but not necessary

Political Finance Internship at Newman Partners

Description of responsibilities
·         Assist with event coordination, planning, recruiting attendees, and day-of-event operations

Successful candidates will have an undergraduate or advanced degree in public affairs, political science, health administration or law, or be enrolled in a degree program. A health care background is not necessary, as mentorship in identifying relevant legislation and follow-up will be provided. Internship Posting for BallotPath Research Internship, Winter 2015


Call for Political Science interns at University of Washington

Position Title: Candidacy Researcher
Location: Remote with monthly scheduled face-to-face

Company Description:

BallotPath is a civic tech startup company that has one simple purpose: to make candidacy information easier to find and act upon. Having access to getting on the ballot is essential to the democratic system. BallotPath’s mission is to take candidacy information for all elected offices and put it online in an easy to find format. We also will break the entire candidacy filing steps down into layman’s terms, so that all citizens can be empowered to run for whatever position they feel inclined to.

To be involved with Ballot Path you have to genuinely want to make a positive disruption in the world and believe that all citizens have equal rights to vote or run for office. The technology is here; it is only a matter of assembling the information and making it accessible to citizens who want to be involved. We will be working on Washington elected positions and will also be preparing to do this work nationwide—some students may be asked to continue with our nationwide efforts in a leadership/managerial role.

Responsibilities:

·         Thoroughly analyze candidacy information for each elected office assigned
·         Contact the proper election officials to gather necessary information and documents, and to verify that information is correct
·         Translate the “legalese” into laymen’s terms that the average citizen can act upon
·         Review previously collected candidacy information for accuracy
·         Proactively and positively work with other BallotPath team members (GIS/tech teams)

Schedule: Beginning early January 2015 and continuing until the work is completed, with a target date of March 15, 2015.  This internship is for 100 hours but may run slightly over.

Qualifications:
-Pursuing degree in political science or public policy preferred
-Ideally GPA 3.00 or higher
-Prefer junior grade or higher
-Interest in election procedure
-Strong writing and grammar skills

Opportunity for a Legislative Internship with Seattle City Council- Winter 2015


Are you curious about municipal law-making, local government or looking to practice your communication skills and see how local government utilizes press and social media? Here’s your chance to learn about public policy, the inner-workings of government, communications and much more about the City of Seattle!

Seattle City Councilmember Jean Godden is offering an unpaid internship (will sign off to receive school credits if applicable).

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR?

We are seeking curious and talented individuals with an interest in the legislative process and communications.  If you have strong writing and organizational skills, great!  If your skills need sharpening, we can help you!  You should possess an excellent work ethic and the ability to complete projects assigned. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and database programs is also desired.

15-20 hours per week (mornings or afternoons)

Internship Program with Congressman Jim McDermott in Winter 2015

The Office of Congressman Jim McDermott is currently accepting internship applications for part-time internships during the Winter academic quarter. A Congressional internship is a great opportunity for undergraduates to gain valuable workplace experience and learn about the functions of our legislative branch. Below are the details for the internship program in our Seattle office: 

Congressional internship program: 

In the Seattle office, interns help out with general office duties, accompany staff members at district meetings or events, and help staff as they assist local residents in resolving problems they are having with the federal government. Interns see and play a role in the daily operations of a congressional office, which is an invaluable experience. Please include the following within your application packet: 

1. Cover letter explaining your interest; 
2. A current resume including 2 references; and, 
3. The year and school term or the dates you would like to intern. We are currently accepting applications for Winter quarter.
