City of Kenmore: Communications Internship



The City of Kenmore is seeking an undergraduate in their senior year or graduate-level student intern to work within the City Manager’s Office.

This position will support our communications and outreach team. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about writing, enjoys working with the public, detail-oriented, and comfortable with multi-tasking.

This position is eligible for up to a 9-month internship through 2015 (full time in summer and approximately 16-20 hours/week during the school year). For students, we will allow some flexibility around the daily and weekly schedule.

Duties could include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the City’s pedestrian and bicycle safety community education plan, including marketing materials, public education campaigns, and special events. 
  • Manage and engage in a variety of social media platforms 
  • Write and edit content for newsletter and news releases 
  • Photograph events and post to media 
  • Attend outreach events 
  • Grant research and writing 
  • Assist with Council reports and communication pieces 
  • Conduct research and analysis on a variety of municipal issues 
  • Other duties as assigned 
Qualifications:
  • Degree (or pursuing degree) in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, public administration, political science, etc.
  • Enrollment in a related graduate program or a senior in a related undergraduate program
  • Available to work full time in summer and approximately 16-20 hours/week during the school year
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work proactively with citizens
  • High level of initiative and motivation
  • Technically savvy, with expertise with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel and web-based programs
  • Knowledge of and experience with using social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Desired: skill with photography, graphics and design
  • Ability to work independently
  • A current Washington State Driver’s License

This position is funded through December of 2015. The Intern will report to the Management Analyst within the City Manager’s office. Pay rate will be $15/hour with no benefits. The internship will begin immediately.
