MW 8:30A-10:20A, Loew 217
Winter 2015
What do Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Neruda and George Orwell have in common? The Spanish Civil War. Often called “the last pure war,” the conflict that raged in Spain between 1936 and 1939 was the first armed confrontation between the forces of democracy and the forces of fascism. Artists and writers took sides, overwhelmingly supporting the democratically elected Spanish Republic.
We will examine different artistic expressions of the war, ranging from novels to poetry, paintings and children’s drawings, posters and music, seeking to understand the often complex relationship between ideology and art.
Classwork will include lecture and small group discussion, a research paper and the option of a creative final project.
All classwork in English
