ASIAN 205 Literature and Culture of Japan from Tradition to Modernity (5 credits) Introduction to Japanese literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in its cultural context. May also include some Korean literature. Texts in English translation.
CHIN 134 First-Year Intensive Chinese for Non-Heritage Learners (15 credits)
Introduction to the standard Mandarin Chinese. Emphasis on learning correct pronunciation and basic structure.
Drill in oral use of the language. Open only to students without previous training in Mandarin.
CHIN 234 Second-Year Intensive Chinese for Non-Heritage Learners (15 credits)
Continuation of first-year non-heritage Mandarin Chinese. Stresses advanced grammar and vocabulary expansion.
Continues aural and oral practice and structural drills.
JAPAN 134 First-Year Intensive Japanese (15 credits)
Fundamentals of the modern Japanese language. Oral communication skills, basic grammar, and reading/writing of
hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. Students with prior background must take placement test.
JAPAN 234 Second-Year Intensive Japanese (15 credits)
Intermediate study of modern Japanese oral and written language. Expanded vocabulary and reading
comprehension, essential for those traveling to Japan. Prerequisite: JAPAN 134/111/112/113.
JAPAN 334 Third-Year Intensive Japanese (15 credits)
Advanced study of modern Japanese oral and written language. Expanded vocabulary and reading comprehension,
essential for those traveling to Japan. Prerequisite: minimum grade of 2.0 JAPAN 234/211/212/213.
KOREAN 134 First-Year Intensive Korean (15 credits)
Covers the fundamentals of the modern Korean language. Includes Hangul, oral communication skills, and basic
grammar. Presumes no initial knowledge of Korean. Students with prior background must take placement test.
KOREAN 135 Elementary Korean for Heritage Learners (5 credits)
Provides grammar background for students who know Hangul phonetically and have minimal oral communication
skills. For students with minimal spoken/home Korean background but no formal classes. Not open to students
who received schooling in Korean during childhood. Prerequisite: score of 45-65 on the KR100A placement test.
