SLN: 11420
Professor: Jerry Franklin
July 13-19th 5 credits,

Spend a week in the forests of the Gifford Pinchot NF! This week-long field course includes visits to select old growth and early seral forests where we will observe and discuss the ecology and management of these socio-ecosystems.

Field sites and topics include:
  • Dry and moist old-growth forests
  • Mt St Helens 1980 eruption and ecosystem response
  • 1902 Yacolt Burn sites
  • 2006 Cold Springs fire
  • Harvest, thinning, and restoration projects
Students will gain an understanding of the ecological structure, function, and disturbance regimes of these forests, as well as an overview of the historic and current efforts to manage and restore them. We will be based in Forest Service housing at the Wind River Experimental Forest with daily road trips and walks and occasional evening lectures.
