Global Youth Connect is now accepting applications for our Summer 2015 Human Rights Programs in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Rwandaand for our Summer and Fall programs in New York City.

Limited scholarships are available. Participants wishing to apply for this scholarship assistance need to apply by the early deadline: February 15.

Documentary Screening with Sebastian Junger, Wed, 11/05/2014, 7:00pm

Dear UW Political Science Department,

My name is Ben Mawhinney, and I am the Marketing Manager at SIFF. I wanted to reach out to you because we have a documentary playing next week that I thought might be of interest to students and faculty in the Political Science Department at UW.

Sebastian Junger (writer of "The Perfect Storm," and acclaimed journalist) is coming to SIFF to present his documentary, The Last Patrol. The film explores the psychological impact of war on journalists and soldiers after they return home. Junger will be at the theater for a post-screening discussion, which will include students, veterans, journalists, and filmmakers (as well as the general audience). It should be really engaging and interesting.

In his latest film probing the up-close-and-personal faces of combat, journalist/filmmaker Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm) explores the shared struggles that soldiers and war correspondents are confronted with, mentally and emotionally, upon returning home.

Sebastian Junger is the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of "The Perfect Storm," "A Death in Belmont," and "Fire." As a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and as a contributor to ABC News, he has covered major international news stories in Liberia, Sierra Leone and other places around the globe. He has been awarded the National Magazine Award and an SAIS Novartis Prize for Journalism. Junger became a fixture in the national media when, as a first-time author, he commanded The New York Times best-seller list for more than three years with "The Perfect Storm," which later set sales records and became a major motion picture from Warner Bros.

SAALT's Young Leaders Institute 2014

Apply to SAALT’s annual leadership program, the Young Leaders Institute (YLI). YLI is an opportunity for 15-20 undergraduate university students to come together in Washington D.C. on July 18-20, 2014 to build leadership skills, connect with activists and mentors, and explore social change strategies around issues that affect South Asian and immigrant communities in the US. The deadline is extended to May 31, 2014!
The 2014 Young Leaders Institute  will focus on LGBTQ justice and allyship. Students will develop projects to address LGBTQ issues and effective allyship on their campuses and in their communities. All students—LGBQ, transgender and gender non-conforming, and allies seeking to stand shoulder to shoulder with LGBT students against anti-LGBT language, bullying, and discrimination--are welcome to apply.

International Justice and Human Rights Program:

The “Challenges of International Justice” 2014 Exploration Seminar in Ireland and The Hague:  Planned for Aug 24 to Sept 16, 2014, the five credit program is open for applications until the end of February. This will be the seventh year of a study abroad program popular with students who have a special interest in human rights, and those considering law school.


Co-sponsored by the Irish Centre for Human Rights in Galway, Ireland, eleven days will be spent at the Centre in Galway before making a four night stop in Dublin, a trip to Belfast, and then an eight day trip to The Hague. The program provides a firsthand study of the major international tribunals and an opportunity to interact with court and human rights professionals in an academic and social setting.
