Attention undergraduate students! The Washington Undergraduate Law Review (WULR) is looking for submissions!

WULR is an academic legal journal at the University of Washington that publishes law-related essays, research papers, and other written work by undergraduates. The law review is entirely run by undergraduates at the University of Washington.

Submission to WULR is open to all majors. We value papers on a variety of legal topics, and students are encouraged to submit undergraduate theses or other academic papers 12 pages or longer. Submissions will be selected for publication by WULR’s executive editors based upon quality of writing, research, and analysis. All submissions accepted for publication may be edited for length and clarity.

Email articles as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx) in double-spaced, 12 point type. Articles should include a cover page with the following information:

UW Law - mock trials - volunteer juror opportunity

We are looking for volunteer jurors to serve on UW Law’s mock trials March 2 and March 9, beginning at 5p and ending before 10p. This is a great opportunity for undergrad students exploring law to see law school students in action. Students may attend one or both days. Each day will see different teams of students presenting their cases.

The consistent positive feedback we get each year from the student “jurors” confirms that this experience is both educational and fun. The law school students will have their game face on, putting in enormous preparation, thought, and energy to try and win a favorable verdict.

The case is a very interesting and tragic wrongful death matter drawn from real life. A bicycle messenger was hit and killed in a downtown Seattle crosswalk by an out-of-town sales representative. The issues to be decided by the jury include allegations of texting by the driver and whether the bicyclist was rushing to make a delivery. This will be quite a realistic experience for your students, taking place at the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle with a veteran Superior Court trial judge presiding over each of the trials.

Introduction to the U.S. Legal System, Wed., Jan. 21, 12:30-1:30pm

Student Legal Services (SLS) is a law office on the UW-Seattle campus that provides confidential legal advice and representation to its students. Students often come to SLS with issues involving landlord/tenant, contracts, family law, criminal law, and estate planning, but we also provide assistance in other areas. SLS helps to educate individual students about their legal rights and responsibilities, which enables them to make educated legal choices.

Come learn about the basics of the U.S. legal system and how to navigate U.S. law as an international student!

Please check in with ISS at Schmitz Hall 459 at least 5 minutes prior to the workshop. Space is limited and is on a first come first serve sign up list. Sign up for the workshop will begin at 12:00 pm the day of the workshop.

Pre Law Society Meeting, Mon. Jan 26th

We have a meeting coming up on January 26th (Monday) at 5:30pm in Paccar room 295. The meeting will include a vist from UW and Seattle University Law and will address admissions and other questions about law school. It's a great opportunity for anyone interested in applying to law school to learn more about the process and what it means to apply. This is a valuable opportunity to gain deeper insight into the law school admissions process, ask burning questions about what each school looks for in potential applicants, navigate your way through "do's" and "don'ts" when writing your personal statement, and get to know the law school representatives better. UW Law Fair needs Volunteers, Nov. 13, 2014

This is an excellent opportunity for those applying to law school and a great way to speak to the schools in person! Over 60 schools will be in attendance from all over the country. The fair is November 13th with volunteer positions from 7:15am to 3:00pm. People are also needed to help put up signs the day before.

We request that volunteers stay a minimum of two hours, but longer is greatly appreciated! If interested, email your availability and phone number to the Pre-Law Society at lawyer2b@uw.edu. If there is an available timeslot, we’ll let you know!

Sociology department internships of interest to pre-law students Winter 2015, DEADLINE Nov. 7th

The Sociology department is again offering several fabulous 2-quarter internship opportunities with our long-standing Civic and Community partners; CourtWatch, Federal Public Defenders Office, HUD, and Seattle Municipal Court.

These are great opportunitites for students to connect their classroom experiences with real world work and they should be of particular interest to students who are thinking about careers in the legal field. The mentors in our partner organizations take their work with our interns
very seriously and are eager to provide rich and meaningful experiences for the students.

In winter quarter students sign up for Soc 404, a 5 credit graded seminar (W 1:30-3:20, SLN 19453), and in the spring, if they need the credits, we can sign them up for 2-5 credits of Soc 399 and arrange for a faculty supervisor.

USC Undergraduate Journal of Law and Society: Call for Submissions

The USC Journal of Law and Society is pleased to announce a call for papers for its Fall 2014 issue.

Whether exploring the impact of corporate law on international political institutions or the effects of patent law in an age of online piracy, the USC Journal of Law and Society welcomes innovative discourse regarding the law and society.

All undergraduates from any university, major, or program are invited to submit research papers of at least 12 double-spaced pages in length. Papers may have been completed for coursework, independent study, or written specifically for the Journal. We encourage students from a wide range of disciplines to submit papers. Papers should relate to an aspect of law and society in some manner, but need not have these topics as the central theme.

The USC Journal for Law and Society carefully considers all submissions that it receives. Our selection process has many steps: each piece is reviewed anonymously by at least two editors, then each piece moves on to a vote by the body of the Journal. There is no “best” time to submit a paper to the Journal, as every article will receive the same level of review.

Submissions are due Friday, September 12, 2014. Please e-mail submissions to uscjournal@gmail.com in Word format (.doc or .docx). Please include a cover page with the title of your paper, your full name, your contact information (cell phone number and e- mail address), the name of your university, your major(s), expected year of graduation, and a 4-6 sentence abstract. Please note that by submitting a paper, authors commit to working with the Journal’s staff to edit and prepare the paper in February and March for publication if the paper is selected.

Internship with the King County Bar Association

The King County Bar Association is looking for an intake and referral intern for their Neighborhood Legal Clinics (NLC) program. The Office of Minority Affairs is offering a low-cost LSAT course this summer. The schedule is M-T-W-Th, 3:30pm—5:30pm from June 23—July 25. It is $550 plus $30 for materials.

Some sign-up logistics:  Sign up is in person at the front desk of the Instructional Center, 1307 NE 40th street.  Payment is via Husky Card ONLY (University policy does not allow us to deal with other forms of payment.)  You are responsible for purchasing the text for the course.  We will be using "10 New Actual Official LSAT PrepTests with Comparative Reading," published by LSAC.  There are many books in this series with very similar titles, so be sure to get this exact one.  It contains LSATs #51 through #60.  Additional instructional materials will be provided on paper or electronically at no extra cost to you.

A Cross-Disciplinary Approach to Justice - Summer Courses

A Unique Learning Opportunity in Summer Quarter:

A Cross-Disciplinary Approach to Justice

Enroll in a unique summer quarter learning opportunity to take one of four allied courses (COM 330, DESIGN 300, DRAMA 303, and PHIL 307).  As an undergraduate learning initiative in the College of Arts & Sciences, this Summer Institute provides opportunities for students to develop and apply a variety of liberal learning skills through integrated cross-disciplinary methods.  These courses have no prerequisites and are open to students in all majors.  The courses will meet separately on Mondays and Wednesdays and together for Friday workshops in which students from each of the four courses will work in teams to develop final presentations on some aspect of justice.  The team presentations will take place at a conference on Justice Across Boundaries to be held on Saturday, Aug. 9.  The conference on Aug. 9 will be the last meeting for each class.  Students who are interested in participating should sign up for one of the four allied courses:

COM 330.  Rhetoric of Science (Professor Leah Ceccarelli)

Studying how scientists use rhetoric to communicate, and how nonscientists use rhetoric to argue about science and its effects, you will discover the means of persuasion available to shape science, its products, and the relationship between both and the publics that surround them. 

DESIGN 300. Design + Thinking (Professor Christopher Ozubko)

MW 9:40 – 11:50 in ART 247 and F 12:00 – 2:20 in OUGL 136

In this course you will explore conceptual problem-solving employing some of the fundamental principles of visual communication.  Collaboratively solving problems in visual design will also help you to develop your critical, analytical, and verbal skills.

Drama 303: The Structure of Dramatic Narrative (Professor Andrew Tsao)

MW 9:40 – 11:50 in HUT 154 and F 12:00 – 2:20 in OUGL 136

This course will explore the various forms the narrative impulse has taken particularly in western civilization in order to enable you to better employ these forms as practitioners in order to convey meaning.  Since all stories are signs of something else or metaphorical in nature, the uses of storytelling can suggest or imply themes, ideas, concepts, morality, ethics, behavior, devotion and persuasion.

PHIL 307:  Justice Across Disciplinary Boundaries (Professor William Talbott)

MW 1:10 – 3:20 in SAV 264 and F 12:00 – 2:20 in OUGL 136

The course will integrate work in psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, economics, and relevant research in the natural and biological sciences with work in philosophy, political theory, and communication to explore how these various disciplines contribute to our understanding of justice.

UW Student Legal Services is Seeking a Legal Assistant

UW-SEATTLE FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES! UW Student Legal Services (SLS) is the campus law office located in the HUB that provides legal assistance,education, and representation to currently enrolled UW-Seattle students who pay the Services and Activities Fee.

SLS is hiring one part-time undergraduate Legal Assistant to work c. 10 hours/wk.  This is a student hourly position on campus; work study is OK. Training starts late spring quarter 2014.
