Sustainability in the curriculum--moving the conversation forward

2-credit, "mid-quarter" course for international students offered again for spring quarter!

This quarter Academic Support Programs will again offer the 2 credit, “mid-quarter start” class “Understanding American Higher Education” for international students.

As a reminder the class is intended to help international students experiencing academic difficulty who may need to drop a class around (or before) mid-quarter but also need to stay in Visa status (12 credits). The class is open to all international students.

The course is now listed as General Studies 391. Students will receive 2 credits for the course, which will begin Week Six (Tuesday May 5th) and run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:20pm. The course will be credit/no credit.

The class is titled “Understanding American Higher Education,” and will combine historical and philosophical context for international students about the evolving role of the university in and beyond the United States. As importantly, the class will connect this knowledge to practical strategies for the students to succeed at a large public university and to help them reflect on their own relationship to the university experience.

We will be enrolling students directly to the class. If you think a student is a good candidate (or if they would like more information) please have them e-mail me with their name and student ID number. My contact is: rburt@uw.edu.

If you have any questions or would like more information please feel free to e-mail or call.

Husky Help and Hope-Training Study Invitation

Researchers at the University of Washington are conducting a research study to evaluate and compare three different suicide prevention trainings. If you are interested, we invite you to participate in this study which includes training about how to recognize at-risk students. Participation is voluntary.

The University of Washington is committed to the health and well-being of students and has a number of programs in place to assist students in distress. A recently funded SAMHSA grant, Husky Help and Hope, allows us to increase support for students by training faculty, staff, and administrators in ways to recognize possible risk for suicide and connect students with resources. Dr. Jennifer Stuber is PI on the grant, and Dr. Elaine Walsh researcher leading this evaluation. If you choose to participate, your participation will help us evaluate and compare these three different training options.

Those who are interested in training will be randomly assigned to one of three training options, all of which last approximately 1 hour. Two training options are online and one is in person. Participants will be asked to complete 4 brief surveys as part of the study. Please see the attached Information Statement for details about the training and evaluation.

If you would like to participate, or if you would like more information, please contact me at 543-4568 or emwalsh@uw.edu*, or you can sign up using the Google Document link: http://goo.gl/forms/7F49glMzbT .
