CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
Cultivating and Connecting Resources: A Workshop for Emerging Disability Studies Scholars and Activists. We are interested in proposals that have potential to contribute to the field of disability studies.
Eligible submissions include research, advocacy, theoretical, or creative work. Completed projects, class projects, or works in progress are acceptable. Abstracts should be submitted in English. Limit one submission per author. The abstract deadline is Friday, May 1st.

Disability studies is a dynamic and growing field in the Pacific Northwest and West Coast. The symposium will raise critical questions about collaborations within the field and between scholars, artists, and activists. This workshop aims to:

symposium participants.
WHAT SHOULD I SUBMIT?
We are interested in proposals that have potential to contribute to the field of disability studies.
Disability studies challenges the traditional ways that disability is constructed in society. It focuses on the social, cultural, and political meanings of disability, including its intersections with other identity categories. Disability studies addresses the pervasive oppression
of people with disabilities and emphasizes the roles of disabled people in defining problems and evaluating solutions.
Eligible submissions include: research, advocacy, theoretical, or creative work. Completed projects, class projects, or works in progress are acceptable. Abstracts should be submitted in English. Limit one submission per author.

Thursday, May 21, 4:00-6:30pm, Kane Hall, Room 225 on "Disability Arts and Culture": Chicago-based artist Riva Lehrer will talk on "When Pain Eats the Picture: Portraiture, Disability, and the Ethics of Power," exploring the complexity of depicting vulnerable subjects and the
paradoxical nature of images of disability. Seattle-based musician Mindie Lind will kick off the program.
Friday, May 22, 10am-5pm, School of Law, Room 138 on "Critical Collaborations": To celebrate and enhance growth and collaboration in disability studies across the Pacific Northwest and West Coast, the workshop will facilitate discussion of an array of interests in the field, engage
support for students, and encourage connecting across disciplines and institutions. Speakers include Elizabeth Wheeler of the University of Oregon and Susan Schweik of UC Berkeley. Patty Berne, a SF Bay area community organizer who is also currently an instructor at UC Berkeley,
will participate in a conversation about movement building in academia, disability rights, disability justice, and cultural activism.
Saturday, May 23, 2-4pm (location and topic TBD): A presentation by Patty Berne, who is a co-founder of the disability justice framework and of the performance group Sins Invalid. Patty's background includes advocacy for immigrants and offering mental health support for survivors of
violence. She was featured in the documentary film "Fixed: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement," for her disability and LGBTQI advocacy within the field of reproductive and genetic technologies. Her experiences as a queer Haitian-Japanese power-chair using woman provide
grounding for her work creating "liberated zones" for oppressed people.

Positive Exposure: The Spirit of Difference - Health Sciences Lecture by Rick Guidotti

Details: The School of Medicine, MEDEX Northwest, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, Speech and Hearing Sciences, and the Division of Physical Therapy, and the Department for Bioethics and the Humanities will host a health sciences lecture by Rick Guidotti. This lecture is geared toward members of the medical community and open to all. Rick Guidotti, a world renowned photographer, became interested in using visual arts to change the way society understands genetic differences, disability and beauty. His Positive Exposure photo and video presentation encourages students and professionals in the health sciences to see individuals with genetic differences as whole people, not just their specific diagnoses. Pandora Scooter is a national touring artist. Winner of the Spoken Knowledge DNC Contest for her anti-prejudice poem "Other." Cast in reality spoken word television show, RELE. Endorsed by International Folk Poet Alix Olson and hailed as a Spoken Word Rock Star. The I AM ENOUGH national tour will be her second national tour serving the LGBTQ youth community.
The show, I AM ENOUGH, follows the story of Pan, who struggles with rejection from her parents and friends, for being gay and for being different. After attempting suicide, Pan finds herself in a hospital where, with the help of a fantastic counselor and her inner strength, she realizes she wants to live, thrive and that she is enough.
There will be a 10-15 minute talk-back at the end of the performance.

Beyond the Selfie|-Spring Celebration of Service & Leadership
University of Washington students see the bigger picture. They expand definitions and break barriers. They take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to their communities. Through service and leadership, students look beyond themselves and see something greater.
As a UW student, how do you look beyond the selfie? Share your service and leadership work at the Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 2:00-6:30 p.m. in the Husky Union Building (HUB).(Please note that students are encouraged to attend the entire event, but the time commitment for the Gallery will be approximately an hour and fifteen minutes between 2:45 and 5:30)
The annual Spring Celebration event provides students across the UW Seattle campus with the opportunity to showcase the many ways they are engaging in leadership and service. As part of the gallery, students present their engagement through a poster display and discuss their service and leadership experiences with other students, faculty, community partners, civic and university leaders.
Benefits of participation include:
All UW undergraduate students are invited to apply for the gallery of student projects. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and projects are accepted on a space available basis.

Students will learn important information on maintaining their F-1 status in regards to enrollment, graduation, employment, travel and more! Guest speakers from the Counseling Center, Career Center, and Registrar’s Office will come talk about the next steps and expectations after graduation for students. We highly encourage graduating students to attend the Final Year Workshop to get information on how to smoothly transition from the UW.
Please check in first with the ISS Office in Schmitz Hall Room 459 at least 5 minutes prior to the workshop. Space is limited! Sign up will start at 2:00pm on the day of the workshop.

Student Tax season is simultaneously drawing to a close and heating up as we come closer and closer to the April 15th tax filing deadline. Student Tax class for Non-US Residents / International Students
UW non-resident students may receive tax forms related to US source funds they receive. The information contained in these forms can be confusing. Student Fiscal Services sponsors tax classes with student tax information for UW non-resident students. The session focuses on helping students understand the 1042S forms sent out by the UW Payroll Office. This class is co-sponsored by International Student Services Office. Class is appropriate for undergraduate, graduate and professional students.

Appetizers with Administrators, April 13th
The ASUW Office of Government Relations is thrilled to announce their final event of the year: Appetizers with Administrators. AL&L Graduate Student BOOK SALE!
It’s nearly time for our department's annual graduate student book sale again!
The book sale inventory is provided by donations from faculty, students, and other community members, and the proceeds from the sale go toward funding travel to conferences for graduate students in the department, as well as other activities.

Inflatable Ponies and Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and a group of students are leading a campus wide effort to educate ourselves on the nature of consent, understand how to support victims and survivors, and highlight that the majority of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.

At RAINN Day you will learn about RAINN 'EM IN. It's a human powered horse race against sexual violence where teams race on inflatable ponies and UW has a team! The official race in on May 16th and all UW students are welcome to join our team (see attached flyer)! There will be music, giveaways, races, and resources at RAINN Day tomorrow - so stop by, say hello, and bounce on an inflatable pony.

Dr. Bassett was appointed commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in January 2014. With more than 30 years of experience in public health, she has dedicated her career to advancing health equity. After Dr. Bassett completed her medical training, she moved to Harare, Zimbabwe, where she served on the medical faculty at the University of Zimbabwe for 17 years. In that role, she developed a range of AIDS prevention interventions to address one of the world’s worst AIDS epidemics. She later served as the associate director of Health Equity at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Southern Africa Office, overseeing its Africa AIDS portfolio. She served for many years as an associate editor of the American Journal of Public Health. Dr. Bassett earned her MPH from the UW School of Public Health in 1985.
