Applications for the Agnes Nelson Scholarship are available. Deadline: Friday, May 8th.

The Agnes C. Nelson Memorial Scholarship is offered to students majoring in either Political Science or Economics, who demonstrate interest in BOTH fields.  One scholarship, approximately $7,600 towards tuition for the 2015-16 Academic year, will be awarded to a student who shows commitment to these fields and meets the following eligibility criteria:

1.  maintain a cumulative UW GPA of at least 3.2,
2.  have completed 25 combined credits in Economics and Political Science, with at least 10 credits in each department,
3.  have completed 75 credits by the end of Spring Quarter 2015,
4.  have submitted a completed application form with all necessary attachments,
5.  be eligible for financial aid, as determined by the UW Financial Aid Office.

***If you did not apply for financial aid (submit a FAFSA) by the February 28th, 2015 deadline, contact the Financial Aid Office in 105 Schmitz Hall about submitting a late application.***

Return the application to the Political Science Advising Office in 215 Smith Hall.  Double Majors in Econ and Pol S may return the application to either the Pol S Advising or Econ Advising offices.

Fritz Study Abroad Scholarship, application due April 17, 2015

If you are studying abroad this summer, early fall or fall, submit your Fritz Study Abroad application by April 17th.  The scholarship application is available online at goglobal.uw.edu. 

You are eligible if you meet the following:
·         Current UW undergraduate
·         3.0 GPA
·         Declared major in Social Sciences or Humanities. Full list of eligible majors here.

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students is currently accepting scholarship applications.

Mary Gates scholarships provide up to $4,000 ($2,000 per quarter for up to two quarters) for students to pursue leadership or research/scholarly activities. These scholarships benefit students in the current academic year, and are open to all UW undergraduate students regardless of class year, major or residency status.

At the upcoming workshops, we’ll discuss the evaluation criteria, look at examples from successful applications, and provide the opportunity to exchange feedback with peers.

Fullbright Applications NOW OPEN!

The US-UK Fulbright Commission opens applications today for the UK Summer Institute Award Programmes for US Undergraduates. Each Programme varies in duration, from three to six weeks, and offers students a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the study of British academics and culture. Students will take part in cultural events, research, collaboration, and presentation at an esteemed British University.

Students from all areas of study are encouraged to apply. We offer nine Summer Institutes, each of which will cover a different theme. These institutes include:

AIFS Summer Institute at Shakespeare’s Globe
Durham University Summer Institute
King’s College London Summer Institute
Nottingham Trent University Summer Institute
University of Bristol Summer Institute
University of Exeter Summer Institute
Queen’s University Belfast
Scotland Summer Institute
Wales Summer Institute

To meet the minimum eligibility, applicants must:
  • Be a US citizen (resident anywhere except the UK) and possess a US passport;
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Have a high level of academic achievement with a minimum GPA of 3.5 (confirmed by academic marks, awards and references);
  • Have completed no more than two years of university study ( i.e. applicants should currently be a Freshman or Sophomore in college/university)
  • Be mature, responsible, independent, and open-minded;
The Awards will cover the majority of all costs incurred, including flights to and from the UK, university fees, and room and board at the host UK University.

Please note: Applications for the 2015 Summer Institute Awards should be submitted via an online form (links available on programme websites) and supplemental material e-mailed to the specified address. Deadlines for 2015 are: 26 February or 5 March, 2015 – depending on the Institute. Please make sure to check the specific Institute page for the particular deadline. Application instructions are available to students on the programme website.

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellowships EXTENDED DEADLINE: Mon. Dec. 22, 2014

Each year the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers 10-12 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors (in 2014-15) and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year (2013-14). They are selected from a pool of nominees from close to 400 participating colleges. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates and have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists and government officials. Positions are paid, full-time positions for one year (salary is $37,000 with full benefits).

Candidates apply to work on specific research projects at the Carnegie Endowment. The 2015-16 projects are:

A. Democracy

B. Nuclear Policy

C. Energy & Climate

D. Middle East Studies: Native or near-native Arabic language skills essential. Strong background in Middle East politics and/or history is a huge plus.

E. South Asian Studies: Applicants should be comfortable with quantitative data manipulation as well as possess an interest in military issues. A strong background in international relations theory, political theory, or international political economy is essential. A strong mathematical background is a plus. Note: foreign language skills are not required.

F. China Studies (Asia Program): Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.

G. Japan Studies (Asia Program): Japanese reading skills required.

H. Southeast Asian Studies (Asia Program): Strong background in economics essential. Background in politics of the region and knowledge of quantitative techniques a plus.

I. Economics (Asia Program): Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.

J. Russia/Eurasian Studies: Excellent Russian reading skills required.

Eligibility requirements:

· Applicants must be graduating seniors or students who have graduated during the last academic year

· No one who has started graduate studies is eligible for consideration

· The Carnegie Endowment accepts applications only through participating universities via nomination

· You need not be a U.S. citizen if you attend a university located in the United States. However, all applicants must be eligible to work in the United States for a full 12 months from August 1 through July 31 following graduation. Students on F-1 visas who are eligible to work in the US for the full year (August 1 through July 31) may apply for the program. If you attend a participating school outside of the United States, you must be a US citizen (due to work permit requirements).

· Applicants should have completed a significant amount of course work related to their discipline of interest. Language and other skills may also be required for certain assignments.

· Applicants must pick one of the programs listed to apply to, and respond to the corresponding essay question within the application materials.

This event is an opportunity for UW undergraduates and alumni to learn about and explore the variety of scholarships, fellowships, and other funded programs to consider for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate years. Graduate students are also welcome to attend. Program representatives from over 30 UW, local and national organizations, agencies, departments, etc. will be tabling, as well as offering information sessions throughout the day. Please stop by anytime from 10am-2pm (and beyond)!

Bonderman Travel Fellowship 2015

The Bonderman Travel Fellowship application is now available for the 2015 cycle. This extraordinary opportunity for travel, discovery, and challenge is made possible by the generous donation of Mr. David Bonderman. It offers University of Washington graduate/professional and undergraduate students (from the Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell campuses) an opportunity to engage in independent exploration and travel abroad. The criteria for application eligibility is outlined below. 
David Bonderman - the donor - wishes to give students an opportunity to experience learning and growth in new and unexpected ways. Bonderman Fellows will undertake international travel on their own for eight months, to six or more countries in two or more major regions of the world. Through solo travel the Fellows will focus on exploration and discovery, learning about the world and themselves in it.

Up to seven graduate and seven undergraduate Bonderman Fellowships will be awarded in Spring 2015. Each Fellowship carries a $20,000 award to be used only for extended solo international travel. Fellows may not conduct research, pursue an academic project, or participate in a formal program or organization.

Eligibility:
All applicants must be enrolled and in good standing at the UW during the quarter the application is due and must hold US citizenship or permanent resident status. Additionally:

GRADUATE/PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS: All students in graduate or professional degree programs are eligible to apply.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: All undergraduate students with senior credit standing and a degree application on file, AND who also meet ONE of the following criteria are eligible to apply:
  • at least a 3.7 cumulative UW GPA by the start of Winter 2015; OR
  • participation and good standing in the University Honors Program (Interdisciplinary, Departmental or College Honors) or in UW Tacoma’s Global Honors Program, by the start of Winter 2015. Undergraduates in one of these honors programs DO NOT need to have 3.7 UW GPA or higher to apply, but simply must be in good standing in their respective programs, whatever that might mean.

Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship, due date Oct. 31, 2014




The Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship (formerly the Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship) encourages a life-long commitment to public service by providing outstanding undergraduates with the opportunity to explore their potential through service and leadership in the community.

Jackson Munro Public Service Fellows are selected based on the strength of a public service project proposed in collaboration with a public sector (non-profit or governmental) organization.

Factors influencing the selection of Munro Public Service Fellows include:
· Historical commitment to and involvement with community engagement activities
· Depth of partnership/relationship with proposed public sector partner
· Scope and impact of proposed work during the Fellowship
· Potentially sustainability of proposed project, how will the organization sustain this work at the end of your Fellowship?
· Connection between proposed project, academic studies, and professional/educational goals and objectives

Made possible through the support of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, the Fellowship is named for late Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson, S. Sterling Munro, Jr., the former top aide to Senator Jackson and Administrator of the Bonneville Power Administration, and Gene Munro, a lifelong advocate for public service and the wife of S. Sterling Munro Jr.

Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) available to undergraduate, graduate and professional students 

FLAS fellowships award tuition and a living stipend as follows:

Academic Year Graduate: $18,000 tuition, $15,000 living stipend
Academic Year Undergraduate: $10,000 tuition, $5,000 living stipend
Summer Graduate/Undergraduate: $5,000 tuition, $2,500 living stipend

2015 USAID Donald Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program


The application deadline is January 20, 2015.

The Payne Program is designed to attract outstanding young people to careers in international development as USAID Foreign Service Officers. The Payne Fellowship Program provides:

· Benefits valued at up to $90,000 over two years toward a two-year master's degree,
· Arranges internships in Washington D.C. and at USAID missions overseas, and

Fellows who successfully complete the program become USAID Foreign Service Officers. Fellows may use the fellowship to attend a two-year master's program in a U.S. institution to study an area of relevance to the USAID Foreign Service, including international development, international relations, public policy, business administration, foreign languages, economics, agriculture, environmental sciences, health, or urban planning at a graduate or professional school approved by the Payne Program. At the end of the two-year fellowship, Fellows enter the USAID Foreign Service.

Applicants must be:

· College seniors or graduates looking to start graduate school in the fall of the year they apply,
· Have GPAs of at least 3.2 and
· Must be U.S. citizens.

The program welcomes applications from those with any undergraduate major and encourages applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the USAID Foreign Service and those with financial need. The Program is funded by USAID and managed by Howard University.

Boren Scholarships & Fellowships for language study abroad - UW information sessions

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are available for undergrad & grad students in all fields planning to study languages abroad during 2015-16 and who are interested in government work.

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. For a complete list of languages, click here.

Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined.  NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. Undergraduate applicants must apply through UW to be considered for the Boren Undergraduate Scholarship Program. UW Seattle's deadline for undergraduate applicants is January 8, 2015 for study abroad programs during the 2015-16 academic year. GO and Fritz Study Abroad Scholarship Open to all UW Undergraduate



The GO! and Fritz Scholarships are open to UW undergraduates from all three campuses and offer awards of $2000 - $5000 to support study abroad.

· The applications are online with access at http://expd.uw.edu/globalopportunities/global-opportunities
· To apply for the GO!, students must be residents of WA state and eligible for Pell Grants or Husky Promise.
· To apply for the Fritz, students must be declared social science or humanities majors with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.



The deadline for GO! and Fritz applications is Thursday, November 6 at 5pm.

· Students studying abroad during winter or spring 2015 should apply now.
· Students studying abroad in summer or autumn 2015 should apply at our next deadline in April.
· Info sessions are: Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 3:30pm in 171 Mary Gates Hall.

Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship, applications due Oct. 31, 2014



The Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship (formerly the Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship) encourages a life-long commitment to public service by providing outstanding undergraduates with the opportunity to explore their potential through service and leadership in the community.

Jackson Munro Public Service Fellows are selected based on the strength of a public service project proposed in collaboration with a public sector (non-profit or governmental) organization.

Factors influencing the selection of Munro Public Service Fellows include:
· Historical commitment to and involvement with community engagement activities
· Depth of partnership/relationship with proposed public sector partner
· Scope and impact of proposed work during the Fellowship
· Potentially sustainability of proposed project, how will the organization sustain this work at the end of your Fellowship?
· Connection between proposed project, academic studies, and professional/educational goals and objectives


Made possible through the support of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, the Fellowship is named for late Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson, S. Sterling Munro, Jr., the former top aide to Senator Jackson and Administrator of the Bonneville Power Administration, and Gene Munro, a lifelong advocate for public service and the wife of S. Sterling Munro Jr.

The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to actively involved student leaders pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields.  Students must be college juniors at the time of selection.  The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development. 

The Truman is open to all juniors and seniors who expect to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2014 and August 2015 and who wish to pursue graduate school in preparation for work in government and public service. 

Applicants for the Truman Scholarship must meet the following:
·         Attend an accredited college or university.
·         Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national.
·         Be in the upper quarter of their junior class.
·         A wish to influence public policies, and
·         Outstanding leadership potential.
